We were joined by filmmaker and sculptor Naheed Raza for a screening of her moving image work, followed by a discussion with Francis McKee, Director of CCA, Glasgow, addressing the concepts and approaches involved in her practice.
Much of Raza’s practice explores the limits of knowledge and the elusive nature of experience. Many of her works appeal to haptic knowledge and tacit awareness, a corporeal intelligence which locks the viewer into a complex relationship between eye, mind and material.
Notions of mutability and transformation have been foregrounded in films such as ‘Silk’ (2009) which focuses on the harvest and gathering of silk from the Golden Orb Weaver, and ‘Sand’ (2010) a study of perpetual undoing which critiques the very possibility of certainty. Linked to these themes, ‘Frozen in Time’ (2013) tackles head on man’s desire to conquer death, the ultimate unknown, by weaving human hopes and anxieties about the future with footage revealing the process of cryopreservation in the US. The film hints at our complex relationship with time, and the contradictions inherent in attempting to alter our biological destiny once and for all.

About Naheed Raza
Naheed Raza works in both film and sculpture. She has been Artist in Residence in the Maths Department at UCL, the recipient of a Wellcome Trust Arts Award and in 2013 was the joint winner of the Jerwood / Film and Video Umbrella ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ Awards receiving a commission for a major new piece of work. Her work has been exhibited at various venues in the UK including solo shows at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, Lismore Castle Arts and Bloomberg SPACE, with screenings at the Arnolfini Gallery, ICA, Whitechapel Gallery, Centre for Contemporary Art Glasgow, Jerwood Space and the Edinburgh Film Festival.
About Francis McKee
In addition to his role as Director of CCA Glasgow, Francis McKee is a tutor and research fellow at Glasgow School of Art, working on the development of open source ideologies. From 2005 to 2008 he was also curator of Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Visual Art.
He has curated many exhibitions including This Peaceful War, The Jumex Collection for the first Glasgow International in 2005; Zenomap (together with Kay Pallister), the presentation of new work from Scotland for the Venice Biennale in 2003; and he was one of the curators invited to contribute in Lyon Biennale 2007. Previously, Francis worked as a historian of medicine for the Wellcome Trust and as Head of Programme at CCA.
For the past fifteen years he has written extensively on the work of artists such as Christine Borland, Willie Docherty, Ross Sinclair, Douglas Gordon, Matthew Barney, Simon Starling, Catherine Yass, Joao Penalva, Kathy Prendergast and Pipilotti Rist. A recent collection of essays has been published and he was one of seven writers to collaborate on a sci-fi novel entitled Philip. Selections of his writing are also available at francismckee.net
