Northern Film & Media is the creative agency for the North East of England. We nurture talent, support media businesses and drive commercial film and television production within the region.
Since our launch in 2002, NFM has leveraged nearly £100m of investment in the North East creative industries and backed more than 700 projects and companies. We work with a range of partners including Creative England, Creative Skillset, BALTIC, BFI, Creative England, Film4, the BBC, Arts Council England and Channel 4 to deliver our slate of projects, events and talent development initiatives.
Creative England is a national agency with strong local and regional links, dedicated to the growth of the creative industries. They invest in talented people and their creative ideas, nurturing our richly diverse games, TV, film and digital media industries. From direct investment and soft loans to business mentoring, they champion the best ideas of talented people and their businesses.
As a not-for-profit organisation they mobilise public and private resources to garner as much support and investment for the creative industries as possible, growing talent and business, addressing market failure and raising ambition, and building the right climate for creative industries to thrive. Creative England’s Talent Development Team offers production, development and professional mentoring support to new and emerging filmmakers through its short film and feature development initiatives, as well as working to grow and sustain filmmaking networks in the English regions.
BFI NET.WORK is a nationwide collaboration to develop filmmaking talent. It helps new writers, directors and producers on the way to their first feature, guiding and encouraging creativity, and thereby nurturing the filmmakers of the future.
NET.WORK involves Creative England, Ffilm Cymru Wales, Northern Ireland Screen, Scottish Film Talent Network and Film London - with backing from the BFI. Every year, it invests £3 million of National Lottery funding in new and emerging filmmakers. Since September 2013, this has meant: funding for over 160 shorts; support for 62 feature developments; right now, four filmmakers are making their first feature. The work NET.WORK has supported has featured in major international film festivals and attracted award nominations, including three BAFTAs and an Oscar®.
Northern Film & Media is funded by the ERDF Competitiveness Programme 2007-13. The ERDF programme is bringing over £300m into the North East to support innovation, enterprise and business support across the region.
