Workshops: artist & filmmaker development day

Friday 20 February 2015 // Great North Museum, Newcastle // 9.00am - 4.45pm // £15, book in advance

A day long workshop exploring aspects of filmmaking at the intersection between film & art including cinematography, sound design and marketing.

Argentinean sound designer, musician, and editor Gustavo Costantini advocates soundtracks to be full of ideas rather than effects. Fresh from teaching two-day workshop Music Strategies in Narrative Filmmaking at the London Film School, we’re delighted he’s able to join us to run a session exploring music and sound in filmmaking. Learn from an international expert about the different ways music and sound can participate in and enrich a film.

Martin Tester is a Director of Photography, and has contributed to numerous artist films including Jane and Louise Wilson’s The Toxic Camera; Mark Wallinger’s Construction and Steve McQueen’s Running Thunder.  His wide-ranging experience also includes shooting commercials, music videos, short films and TV idents. His familiarity with studio/location lighting and elaborate camera movement is the key to his work, and uniquely he owns Red Dragon, Black Magic Pocket Camera and 16mm full camera kits. During this session, learn about techniques and tips for achieving results on a variety of budgets.

With a background in marketing, press and publicity Sally Hodgeson has successfully promoted live music, theatre, comedy, dance and film and is experienced in connecting to audiences through face-to-face interviews, traditional PR and social networks. She was Communications Executive on the BAFTA winning THIS IS ENGLAND (Warp Films) Community Manager during the development of Ken Loach’s documentary SPIRIT OF ‘45 (Sixteen Films) The Great Hip Hop Hoax and ORION: The Man Who Would Be King (all Glimmer Films). In addition, she was Producer of Marketing and Distribution for Jeanie Finley’s Stockton-based documentary SOUND IT OUT. She has experience of working with national film critics and managed SOUND IT OUT’s theatrical release, dealing directly with cinema programmers, negotiating box splits, organising the logistics of supporting events (live bands, DJs) and connecting with audiences in cities where SOUND IT OUT screened. Draw out the lessons from Sally’s experience of running successful crowdfunding campaigns, bringing in on-board partners, corresponding individually with backers and identifying and connecting to potential audiences to promote your own projects.
