Northern Film & Media are working in partnership with Women in Film and Television and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art to nurture and develop six emerging female filmmakers over the course of our twelve month development scheme RISE. The bespoke programme is aimed at showcasing the best up-and-coming talent in the UK and addressing the uneven balance of female writers and directors within the industry. RISE is supported by Creative Skillset's Skills Fund, which is funded by the BFI with National Lottery funds, through the Skills investment fund.

The six filmmakers will be showcased online and their projects will be developed through two intensive script and production residentials. They will be supported in finding a producer, take part in a summer shadowing scheme and be guided through the distribution and marketing process.

The six filmmakers will receive one-to-one guidance sessions from the four RISE industry mentors  which include acclaimed script editor Kate Leys, Director Josh Appignanesi (All Roads Lead to Rome, The Infadel), Producer Andrea Cornwell (Suite Francaise, The Last Days on Mars, The Scouting Book For Boys) and Distribution and Marketing expert Julia Short .

At the end of the process the writer-directors will be featured as part of our Women in Film Seminar in collaboration with WIFT and will have the chance to pitch their projects to leading production companies and financiers.
