Film Producer Samm Haillay will offer his insights in this informal 2hr round table session aimed at developing participants understanding of the business of feature film production. The session will cover the practicalities of developing and financing art-film in the UK and Europe.
Samm Haillay founded independent production company Third with Duane Hopkins in 2001. He produced Hopkins’ multi-award winning short films and feature debut Better Things, which premiered to critical acclaim at International Critics Week, Cannes in 2008. Samm also produced Hopkins’ multi-channel film installations series Sunday, which played at Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art and at Open Eye Gallery before travelling to Yokohama for exhibition as part of CREAM. The series has since played in Cannes and Toronto. As well as producing all of Hopkins’ film and galley work Samm produces also a number of other talented directors work through Third including the BAFTA nominated, Silver Bear winning Jade by Daniel Elliott. Samm’s short film productions have won over 45 awards inc. Berlin, Venice Edinburgh, and Chicago and in 2010 he coproduced Gillian Wearing’s feature debut Self Made. A member of BAFTA, EAVE and ACE, Samm sat on the short film jury in Berlin 2010. Samm is also an Associate Senior Lecturer in Film Production at Teesside University, a board member of Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival and a patron of the Underwire Film Festival. More recently Samm produced Hopkins’ second feature, Bypass, a ticking-clock morality tale about a young man (George MacKay) driven to extremes because of poverty. The $1.7m (£1m) production, a UK-Sweden co-production with Ruben Ostlund’s Plattform Produktion, shot in nine weeks and premièred at the Venice Film Festival.
